Hello all you jazz heads, I am Richard F. Blackwell, the host of Jazz On My Mind. This week the much anticipated Clifford Brown Jazz Festival will be happening in the jazz capital of the world, Wilmington Delaware. The festival began in 1989 and is named for the great trumpeter Clifford Brown. Clifford was born and raised in Wilmington and graced these streets until his passing in 1956. It takes place every year at Rodney Square, across from the world famous DuPont Hotel. It is now the largest free jazz festival on the east coast. That's right, the fantastic music festival that has featured the likes of legends George Duke, The Count Basie Orchestra, Poncho Sanchez, Stanley Clarke, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, McCoy Tyner, Najee and many others is back. This year I would like to bring attention to a great group that is scheduled to perform on opening night, Tuesday, June 21 at 6pm. The group, 'Manifest III'. This is an outstanding new music group, comprised of four legendary musicians. On keyboard, Dennis Fortune, on bass, Michael Cruse, on drums, Harry 'Butch' Reed, and on guitar, Harold 'Twig' Smith. Together they have over a century of performing, producing, composing and recording with other legends around the world. Manifest III's music is fine as aged wine, smooth even when invigorating. Never too much, but always leave you wanting more. From their very first notes you will know that Manifest III is serious about their mission, to take you on a musical journey that will infiltrate your site, touch, and hearing. So I invite everyone to come and witness this musical presentation from a hot new, but veteran group that will take control of your musical soul, Manifest III. I am privileged and honored to be on stage and introduce Manifest III to Wilmington and the world. So join me and you too will agree, that will it comes to music, there is none greater than Manifest III. May God bless Clifford Brown and all the other greats gone before us. Thank You.

ANIYA CD Release

Before I arrived in Wilmington Delaware in 2009, I did not know what to expect in the way of jazz talent. Of course this is the home of the great, late Clifford Brown, but on the west coast, that's all you heard. Now check this out, two years later I have come to recognize the city of Wilmington as the' jazz capital of the world'. The amount of great talent here is unbelievable. In fact, I am like a kid in an ice cream parlor. There is one group in particular that has captivated me, Aniya. After 16 years as a radio personality in Los Angeles, there are two things that I know, music and talent, and Aniya is excellent in both categories. This group of 6 very skilled musicians perform music that is incredibly smooth, soulful and jazzy. What a tremendous combination and recipe for success. I also enjoy their presence in concert, always in tune and working together, giving the audience the best of their musical magic. This group features Delbert Boyer, guitar, Mark Mitchell, saxophones, Robert Nelson, drums, Albert 'Deek' Morton, bass, Monty Pollard, keyboards and J.Lamar Wagner, percussion. They are all from the east coast area with very diverse musical backgrounds and together they are fantastic. To this day they have released two compact discs, In The Moment, and, One Love. In fact Aniya is set to release their third disc, Full Circle, in September, 2011.To celebrate there was a big promotional party held for Aniya on Saturday July 9 at Jazmine in West Chester, Pa. which I had the pleasure to host. This was a terrific jazz evening we spent chatting with Aniya, and enjoying their superb live performance. You can check out the party photos in our photo gallery section to see the jazz fun we had. Stay tuned because the c.d, Full Circle, will be released with an even bigger party this September in Wilmington. To follow and become a fan of Aniya, just log on to their website: www.aniyajazz.com, or you can click on their link from this sites homepage. While you are there, check out Aniya's music and you too will say this group is jazz dynamite. Aniya never ceases to amaze me with fine original music and a sound that totally putts you in a smooth jazz groove. If you live or if you plan a visit to east coast, be sure to see if they are performing in a city near you,if not, then keep an ear open for their smoking, but smooth jazz c.d, Full Circle. You can also join them on Facebook.

Introducing J. B. Baretsky

As a lover of jazz music and it's culture, it is very important to me that jazz stays alive. In order for that to happen, there must be a commitment from generation to generation to pass on the music and it's rich history. As a jazz journalist, I am always looking to spotlight individuals who share this same mission. With that said, I would to introduce my new jazz friend, Mr. JB Baretsky, to Jazz On My Mind. First I must tell you that JB is a member of the upcoming generation of jazz performers. His 24 years old and has already joined the fight to keep jazz alive. Born in Long Island, JB aspired to be a performer at a young age. His parents enjoyed watching him entertain family and friends at gatherings. In fact through his short career, JB's parents and family has been his greatest inspiration. With a tremendous amount of natural talent and ability, JB started singing jazz seriously while in high school. His musical inspirations are legends Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Patti Page, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Billy Holiday who's hit, 'I'll Be Seeing You' is one of JB's favorite tunes. Mr.Baretsky has learned something from each of these great performers and has applied it to his own musical soul, a soul that is committed to being the best jazz vocalist of our modern time. In speaking to JB I could feel his deep passion for the music and his desire to tell us a story with his talent and love for the songs he sings. JB has performed at several major venues on the east coast with his most memorial being his performance at New York's Lincoln Center earlier this year of 2011. Until you can witness JB live, we invite you to check him out on his you tube channel, JB Baretsky. You can also like him on Facebook. There you can see him perform standards like, 'Fly me To The Moon', 'That's Life', 'Luck Be A Lady' and others. You will also see his vocal creativity as he sings a jazz rendition of Taio Cruz's hit , 'Dynamite' and the very moving, spiritual song, 'Hallelujah', a song JB dedicates to his cousin, Army Spec. Russell Carter', seriously injured in Afghanistan. He also sings this song for the moms who's sons are fighting over seas, that they all may return safe and out of arms way. I think this song really displays JB's ability to sing us a story, and how he uses his talent to convey his feelings through jazz music. JB is currently working on his new cd entitled, 'Less Is More', which will be released this fall. It will be a combination of his new music plus some of everyone favorite standards. I must admit that I am very impressed with this young man as a person, as a performer, and I truly believe in his commitment's to keep jazz alive. I also believe that we must support upcoming talent such as JB because of their desire to continue a tradition made famous by jazz legends who are a part of American history. Greats like Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Lena Horne, Betty Carter, Quincy Jones, and many others. So Mr.JB Baretsky, on behalf of all the jazz lovers around the world, we welcome you and we thank you for your passion and dedication to preserve this music and culture established by the legends. Thank you for keeping jazz alive. God bless.
